Dog grooming at home: deshedding tools, clippers and shampoo

The right grooming tool is the one that matches your dog's coat and that your dog will actually let you use. Noise and coat type decide more than the feature list.

By the PetBea teamUpdated October 11, 2026

The short answer

Start from the coat. A deshedding tool for a double coat is not the same job as clippers for a trim. Check the noise, introduce each tool slowly, and ask a groomer or your vet if your dog's skin looks irritated.

Which one is for you?

  • Your dog sheds a lotA deshedding tool is the first thing to look at. A grooming vacuum is a nice extra if your dog tolerates the sound.
  • You want to trim at homePick quiet clippers and practice short sessions long before you try a full trim.
  • Your dog hates loud toolsSkip the vacuum and use a brush. Not every dog will accept one.
  • Your dog has dry skinAsk your vet first, then consider a gentle shampoo made for dogs.

Quick answers

How often should I brush or deshed my dog?

It depends on the coat and the season. Many dogs do well with regular, short sessions. Your groomer or vet can tell you what suits your dog.

Can I use human shampoo on my dog?

It is better to use shampoo made for dogs, because skin is different. If your dog has itchy or sore skin, ask your vet before trying products.

What if my dog is afraid of clippers or a vacuum?

Go slowly. Let your dog sniff the tool switched off, reward calm behavior, then try short sessions with it on. If it does not work, a professional groomer can help.

Does PetBea get paid when I click?

Not yet. No link on this site earns us money today. If that changes, we will say so next to every store button, and it will not change what we write.

Why is this a shortlist and not a ranking?

Because we have not used these products yet. We label a product as tested only when we have our own photos or video of Puffy using it. Until then it is a shortlist, and we say what we still need to verify.
