Pet carriers and playpens: size, safety and travel rules to check

The right carrier is the one your pet will walk into, and the one your airline or car actually allows. The size on the box is only the start.

By the PetBea teamUpdated October 11, 2026

The short answer

Pick the size from your pet, not from the price. Your pet should be able to stand, turn around and lie down. If you fly, check your airline's own carrier rules before you buy, because sizes and rules differ and can change.

PetBea does not earn money from any link yet. If that changes, we will say so next to every store button. How that works

Which one is for you?

  • Your cat hates being pushed inLook for a top-loading opening.
  • You mostly go to the vet or by carA sturdy hard-sided carrier is easier to clean and to secure.
  • You want a safe space at home or on tripsA playpen can give a puppy or small pet room to move. Check the height against how high your pet can jump.

Quick answers

What size carrier does my dog or cat need?

Your pet should be able to stand, turn around and lie down in it. Measure your pet and compare with the interior size listed by the seller.

Is a carrier airline approved?

Only your airline can tell you. Rules differ by airline and can change, so read their carrier page before you buy and before you fly.

Soft or hard carrier for a nervous cat?

Either can work. Top-loading openings and a familiar blanket inside help most. Get your cat used to the carrier at home well before the trip.

Does PetBea get paid when I click?

Not yet. No link on this site earns us money today. If that changes, we will say so next to every store button, and it will not change what we write.

Why is this a shortlist and not a ranking?

Because we have not used these products yet. We label a product as tested only when we have our own photos or video of Puffy using it. Until then it is a shortlist, and we say what we still need to verify.
