Shortlist, details being checked

How to choose an orthopedic dog bed your dog will actually use

A bed that looks thick in the photo can flatten in a month. Here is what to check so your dog still has real support after the first wash.

The short answer

Measure your dog first, pick firm foam that is described clearly (not just 'soft'), and make sure the cover comes off and goes in the wash. Older dogs, big dogs and dogs with sore joints get the most out of an orthopedic bed. If your dog limps or struggles to get up, talk to your vet before you shop.

Which one is for you?

  • Your dog is older or stiffGo for firm support, a low entry edge and a non-slip base. Mention any limping to your vet.
  • You have a large dogCheck the size chart against your dog's measured length, and be wary of foam that is not described.
  • Your dog chews or digs at beddingPick a sturdy cover and supervise at first. Any bed can be destroyed by a determined chewer.
  • Your dog has accidents or comes in wetMake a waterproof liner or water-resistant cover a must.

Quick answers

Does my dog really need an orthopedic bed?

Not every dog does. Older dogs, large breeds and dogs with joint problems often benefit from firmer support. If your dog limps, hesitates on stairs or struggles to get up, ask your vet about it.

How thick should an orthopedic dog bed be?

There is no single right number. Heavier dogs need firmer and usually thicker foam so they do not sink to the floor. Look for a stated thickness and a clear description of the filling.

How often should I wash a dog bed cover?

Follow the care label. As a rule, wash it when it smells or looks dirty, and more often if your dog has accidents or comes in wet.

Does PetBea get paid when I click?

Not yet. No link on this site earns us money today. If that changes, we will say so next to every store button, and it will not change what we write.

Why is this a shortlist and not a ranking?

Because we have not used these beds yet. We label a product as tested only when we have our own photos or video of Puffy using it. Until then it is a shortlist, and we say what we still need to verify.
